Clinical Survey of 1,639 Cases of Pediatric Surgical Diseases

Abstract

|
A clinical review was made on 1,639 cases of pediatric surgical disease which were operated upon in Hae Dong hospital from January 1990 to August 1994. The incidence of pediatric operation was 39.8% of total operations at the department of
general
surgery. The male to female ratio was 2.4 : 1. The most prevalent age group was in between 1 to 6 years of age(38.7%). Common diseases of pediatric surgery were inguinal hernia in 848 cases(51.7%), acute appendicitis in 334 cases(20.4%),
congenital
megacolon in 82 cases(5.0%), tongue tie in 82 cases(5.0%) and cryptorchidism in 50 cases(3.1%). Inguinal hernia was most common disease in both sex. Congenital megacolon was the most common disease in neonate, inguinal hernia in infacy, early and
late
childhood, and acute appendicitis in adolescence. Postoperative complication occured in 42 cases(2.5%) and the wound infection was the most common complication(47.6%). Mortality rate was 8 cases(0.5%). The most frequent cause of death was
respiratory
failure.
